Yes, I stumbled on that in the end myself. Basically, to make everything 
play nice

1. in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, make sure you have something like

Section "Files"

# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
# By default, a font server independent of the X server is
# used to render fonts.
        FontPath     "unix/:7100"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/X11/fonts/100dpi"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1"

2. in /usr/bin/vncserver, probably should also add

$cmd .= " -fp 

in the appropriate place.
